Usdan Faculty Lessons: Breakfast Birdfeeder

By Ori Cosentino, Usdan Nature & Sustainability faculty member

This little treat for your local birds uses household items and is simple to assemble.

WHAT YOU NEED:
1 cardboard tube
1 piece of string, about 16 inches
1 butter knife or spoon
3-4 tablespoons peanut butter
3-4 tablespoons rolled oats
Optional : 1 tablespoon sesame and/or sunflower seeds

HOW TO:
1. Spread peanut butter evenly over the cardboard tube using the knife or spoon.
2. Place the oats (and seeds if using) on a plate and roll the tube in the oat mixture until it is covered.
3. Run the string through the center of the tube and tie it together at the top
4. Hang from a tree branch.
5. Enjoy bird-watching!

Tip: if you do not have oats, a non-sugary cereal would also work. Think plain puffed grains or a bran cereal.
